Welcome to my website.
I trained in Textile Design at Brighton Polytechnic and then at the Royal College of Art where I specialised in woven textile design. I have always loved to draw and paint and to express myself through colour, pattern and texture as a contrast to the structured processes of weaving. I worked as a Designer in the Textile industry for a number of years and then took a teaching qualification before having my 3 children. After a variety of part-time jobs I wanted to get back into doing my own work and took the plunge, joined a local Art Group and began painting. I now paint and create from my converted garage studio in the beautiful Hampshire countryside in between school runs, dog walks and domestic life.
My paintings often start with layers of hand-decorated or recycled papers and other materials to make interesting surfaces and collages on canvas or MDF board to which I apply paint and other media with a variety of brushes and tools often giving spontaneous and unpredictable results. I enjoy being creative and experimental and often paint over or sand back old or overworked paintings to create exciting new surfaces to work on.
I take a lot of photographs and keep sketchbooks to jot down or sketch new ideas. I am generally inspired by my surroundings - my home, my family life, my garden and my enjoyment of the changing patterns and colours of nature, the rustic simplicity of the countryside, beautiful flowers and food, the sea, holidays and the nostalgia of happy times, sunny days and a simpler life.
I hope you like my work.
